Medical tattooing is the term often used for tattooing following a surgery, trauma or conditions such as alopecia. It may refer to a nipple areola tattoo after breast reconstruction surgery, the camouflage of a scar, or the simulation of hair in normally hair-bearing areas that are damaged or scarred. It is however all cosmetic tattooing. It is done to provide cosmetic enhancement to an affected area. It uses colour and illusion to make an area appear more favourable to the eye, just the same as it does with a brow sparse of hair or ageing lips lacking colour.
The cosmetic tattoo technician will have undergone additional training and education on these procedures. They involve a further range of pigment colours, needle configurations and more advanced techniques. Often times the area that is being tattooed may lack the normal structure of skin due to scarring or grafting and several treatment sessions may be required. This reinforces the importance of making a thorough assessment of what may be achievable and ensuring that the client has realistic expectations. Such procedures can give the client a much improved sense of normality.
